Paintings

“Color possesses me. I don’t have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour: Color and I are one. I am a painter.”                      –Paul Klee

Color has always been a part of me, and has possessed me, and no matter what I do or where I go, I see and contemplate color.  The various human responses to color fascinate me, and I enjoy exploring the many facets of color and its many expressive qualities. I am especially interested in how the human mind responds psychologically and emotionally to color, and the contexts through which color is perceived. Through each painting I would like the viewer to personally experience some kind of emotional reaction. Not all paintings are intended to be intrinsically beautiful, just as some emotions are not.

Through oil paints on canvas, I strive abstractly to represent the layers of consciousness that are part of our human existence, some which only appear far below the common surface. Each person has a series of layers with which they always live, showing one layer to the world and then experiencing another undiscovered layer much further down; often these layers are reflective of a person’s childhood, memories, decisions, emotions, hurts, healings, thoughts and insight.

Through organic shapes mingling with geometric shapes, the structure and spontaneity of the human mind both coexist. Through the texture and movement of brushstrokes I strive to accentuate the expression of the colors’ intent. I strive to incorporate the transparency of layers and color combinations to capture certain psychological expressions and states of mind.

The subject matter of my exploration emerges in swirling, emergent and organic forms that vary in tone, hue and intensity. I seek to highlight the underlying subliminal expressions of the mind and the many layers that are hidden beneath, especially in the layers furthest from the surface. As the many different facets of color fascinate me, so do the different aspects of people, and how the layers of memories, thoughts, experiences, upbringing and decisions all build upon one another and overlap to form the amorphous hidden inner image of the person one encounters.                                               ~Rachel Brask
